Valediction

In the deep morning I woke
rose from my bed
dressed
and walked out to the porch

The night sky
smudged with stars so bright
they hurt the eyes –
even through pollution’s
blurring haze

And into this miasmic mix
I spoke your name

The syllables of you
faded into dark.
My heart, released
whispered soft gratitude
for intimacy
long left in the past,
given to the tapestry
of what once was

Returning to my bed
I felt my heart calmed
knowing I had a future
without you –
knowing that the love
that once stopped my heart
did not stop life

And gliding into sleep
my lips
curved into a smile
said goodbye:
I love you.
